Following are some guidelines that should be followed to help keep your PC secure and running its best.
Keep Windows updated on a weekly basis with the Windows update utility. It's recommended to install all the critical updates. The other updates can be installed at the users discretion. It's good to create a restore point before doing the updates.
Run Norton Anti-Virus once per week and keep it updated with the Live update feature.
Keep the Firewall turned On.
Run the Ad-aware utility once per week and keep it updated.
Run the Spybot search and destroy utility once per week and keep it updated.
Update Spyware Blaster once per week.
Run a hard disk Clean-up and Defragmentation once per month and after installing new software.
Every 3 months open the computer case and use canned/compressed air to blow out any dust that may be accumulating in tight spots like the CPU and video card heatsink. Use a vacuum to finally remove all the dust that's accumulated inside the computer.
It's recommended to do data backups to CD or DVD for critical data.
It's best to turn the PC off when it's not in use. It saves energy, lowers dust accumulation and increases the life of the fans and any other moving parts.
Create restore points periodically.
